Exploring Rotting Pumpkins - Halloween science

When Halloween is all said and done with there's a lot of pumpkins and jack-o-lanterns looking a little sorry for themselves and ready to be put in the trash! But don't miss out on this amazing way to show your little monsters the process of decomposition- also known as rotting! This amazing process happens in all forms of life, by which organic substances are broken down after death and eventually becomes part of the earth again. A great easy, free science experiment for your little monster!

If you have a pumpkin that you didn't carve into a jack-o-lantern, put it outside in the garden for your little monster to explore and play around. The decomposing process will take much longer, in fact there was a cold snap and our pumpkin just wouldn't die, so our little monsters got to play with it for ages! They loved "cooking" with it "washing" it and stacking rocks on top of it! We finally broke it open and then set it in an area where they could look at it while it started to decompose.

If you have a jack-o-lantern I wouldn't let them play with it, the decomposing process, has already started! You can have this out for a little as a week and see a big difference, especially if you have it somewhere warm! This really puts the gross into Halloween!!
Gift of Curiosity let their Jack-O-Lantern sit out for several months!
