Celebrating World Book Day

We LOVE children's books here in The Basket and are really excited to be celebrating World Book Day this year. The importance of reading and exploring books from an young age cannot be underestimated. Reading for enjoyment is important for a child's personal development and has been reported as more important for children’s educational success than their family’s socio-economic status. (Gov.UK) World Book Day is a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and the love of reading. The main aim of World Book Day is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own. You can pick up a World Book Day coupon from you local library, nursery or school and chose from 10 great books (or use your coupon for £1 off any book or audio book costing over £2.99) at participating UK retails.

You can celebrate World Book Day, throughout the week leading up to the big day, by setting up different activities which all connect back to books and story telling. Hopefully you and your little monsters get inspired and explore books and story telling in different ways and discover new favourites!

Reading in the Dark:
Our little monsters were explore with the flash lights, when they all ended up in the book corner reading books to each other.  It was so sweat and was just another reminder of how important it is to let your little monsters have the freedom to discover- they might just do something we as adults would never think of, but absolutely love!!

Painting pictures of their favourite books:
Our little monsters  love exploring their favourite books through creativity and are very focused when it comes down to painting their favourite book cover! They all did a fantastic job and some of them were truly amazing and accurate!! It was a great way for the kids to work on small gross motor skills, creativity, literacy and list goes on- Of course while having loads of fun!

Story Stones:

Story Stones are a great way to encourage your little monsters to talk, create, imagine and eventually write! Each hand painted stone is unique and perfect to get your little monster talking, and creating their own perfect story or help to retell their favourite book! There are so many different stories to be created within each set of Story Stones- the possibilities are endless. You can make your own set of story stones or get a set from or Thrive 360 Living.

Upcycled Story Magnets:
We love photocopying some of the key pictures and laminated them to put into our story sack. So naturally we thought these Upcycled Story Magnets from overly loved books was a great way to keep the story going! We love that they've add photos of their little monsters (We did this for small world play), so now they can become part of the story!

Story Sacks:
Story sacks are a great way to get your little monster interacting with books on so many different leaves: role play, imagination, literacy, large and small gross motor skills- the list goes on. Story sacks a easy to make and don't have to be expensive. We've made a few story sacks:
